The HSU Primer
From The Editor
When I joined the Harpooners, it was my first experience with a
Sherlockian
society. Although I was comfortable with the fellowship and the
friendly
atmosphere, I remember being overwhelmed at my initial meeting when the
various members were discussing the "Canon" (the "Canon" is The
Complete
Sherlock Holmes and four novels). There was considerable - all
fifty-six short stories conversation concerning the stories, and I was
able to follow most of the discussion; however, occasionally a term or
phrase was brought forth which left me puzzled. Despite being familiar
with the Canon, I was not familiar with the events or the terminology
being
addressed. I questioned my background concerning the Canon and
Sherlockiana!
Did I know as much as I should know? Could I become well versed enough
to contribute to the meetings? As time passed, I realized my
apprehension
at the first few meetings was unfounded. I became comfortable with the
discussion, and playing The Game became second nature. To my delight, I
discovered the spirit of 1895 and the camaraderie of Sherlockians.
If you are intrigued by Holmes and Watson, have a reverence for the
Canon, or a fascination for things Victorian, you will be at home in
the
world of Sherlockiana. A dialogue between fellow Sherlockians
concerning
their mutual passion is always captivating and rewarding! I cordially
invite
YOU to browse through this Primer and to join The Harpooners of the Sea
Unicorn. As a Sherlockian, you will experience a grand immersion into
Holmes
and Watson s Victorian world of 1895 . . . . Pray, peruse, and enjoy!
