Writing Assignments

The Barn

1.  Proverbs

Proverb – A proverb is a short popular saying that expresses some useful thought.  For example: All that glitters is not gold.

Nettie had several proverbs she quoted throughout the book.  Three are:  “People who talk about luck don’t think much of themselves,” “If you wear your mother’s dresses, you get your mother’s life,” and “A gift in dead hands is water in a broken jug.”

Using the provided web sites or other sources, select a proverb (or quote) for Ben and explain your choice.

2.  Similes

Similes are comparisons that use like or as.  For example, she is as beautiful as a freshly bloomed rose.  Similes were used quite often throughout The Barn.  Your assignment is to find 10 similes and indicate the page number on which you find each.
