TIME CAPSULE

How can you remember a certain event or a particular time period?   How about by creating a time capsule?

Surely, something has happened to you that you don’t want to ever forget.  Surely, you have various items that you saved from this event so that you would never forget.

I bet someone has a special card that was received for a birthday, a precious pair of earrings from a distant grandmother who didn’t know exactly what to get you for your birthday, a party favor that you gave to your friends, photographs of the special day, and maybe even some of the bows from your presents.

Maybe you have items from a special vacation you took with your family.  Along the way, you might have collected postcards from the various states you passed through, maybe you saved some seashells from your first trip to the ocean, and you might have saved the receipts from each of the restaurants you ate at during your vacation.

The point is, when you experience something that is important to you and that you have looked forward to, you often save small items to help you preserve the memory of it happening.

I want you to use those items to create a time capsule.  You can use one of many items to create the capsule.  You could use an empty paper towel roll, an empty toilet paper roll, an empty shoebox, etc.

You will fill your capsule with the items that you choose to represent a special time in your life.  The capsule will be sealed.  If you use a paper towel roll, you can tape or glue heavy paper across the end.

BUT, before you seal your capsule, you will write a short note to yourself telling these things: the date you are writing the letter, that this capsule is being done as a language arts assignment, the approximate date you wish to open the capsule, and why you have included the items you have chosen to include in the capsule.

Then, you may seal the capsule.  After it is sealed, you can decorate the capsule using construction paper, crayons, markers, etc.

You need to bring your items for the time capsule on                                             .

You will be graded according to the following scale:

Included more than 3 items in the time capsule:                 0         6

The items included represent the same experience

                        or time period                                                 0         6

The time capsule is decorated colorfully                               0         4          6

The time capsule includes the note to yourself                    0         6
