The Poetry Anthology –Your Private Collection

Class,

You are creating a poetry anthology (a collection of poetry) in order to expose yourself to the incredible array of poetry that is “out there” for you to experience.  Through collecting, reading, copying, and writing about poems you collect, I hope that you will begin to notice what it is about a certain poem that appeals to you.  Specifically, I’d like you to notice images that come to your mind when reading a poem, the way the poet uses word placement, stanza, and white space to create meaning.  Also, look for those old familiar things like simile, metaphor, personification, and symbolism.  These are just some of the ways you can analyze a poem and uncover a poem’s meaning.

What are we doing exactly?

A poetry anthology comprised of 12 poems selected by you and centering on a central theme (i.e. friends, religion, love, dreams, humor, forgiveness, war, food, weather, tolerance, goals, nature, choices, betrayal, etc.)

What am I required to have completed?

¨      12 typed poems (each on a separate piece of paper; for each poem write the source – the last name of the author or editor of the book and the page number - under the title and author)

¨      All poems bound in a book with a creatively designed and titled covered

¨      Table of contents with the title and page on which your poems and responses can be located

¨      Two poems must be illustrated (your artwork – no computer graphics)

¨      A brief response to each poem in your anthology, analyzing its meaning and explaining why you like it (on a separate sheet of paper, typed, immediately following each poem)

¨      Works cited page

Where do I get the poems?

Only two poems per source!!!

¨      Mrs. Bradley’s books

¨      Books from your home

¨      Books you checked out from libraries

¨      Song lyrics

¨      A poem written by a family member

¨      A magazine

¨      Poems from the Internet:  You may get 7 poems from the Internet but only 2 poems per website.

How long do I have to work on this?

The whole project is due on the day of your semester exam!

When do I work on this?

You will have class time on several days to work on the anthology.  There will be several days that you will have 10-15 minutes at the end of class.  You should use your time wisely.  Daily checks will be made to ensure you are working on the anthology.  If you are not working, you will lose points from the points allotted for daily work and effort – you can receive a negative point score in this area.

Written Responses to Poems

Your response to each poem should be written in paragraphs.  Please include the title and author of each poem at the top of the page. You will respond to three of the following six questions in each poetry response.  You should respond to each question in a minimum of 3 sentences (for a total of 9 sentences per each poem).  Do not choose the same three questions for each poem!  You can lose points for not responding to a variety of questions.  A sample poem and response is included.

1.      What was your first response to the poem?

2.      What do you see happening in the poem?  (speaker, symbols, comparisons/contrast/conflicts)

3.      What images (five senses) are called to mind?

4.      What feelings does the poem awaken in you?  Do your feelings somehow connect with those of the poet?

5.      What are the sounds of the poem?  (rhyme, rhythm, alliteration, repetition)

6.      What does this poem remind you of in your life?

Works Cited Page

On the works cited page you will document all of the books you use to obtain your ten poems.  Remember, you can only get two poems from any one source.  You will need the author of the book, the name of the book, and publication information (year of publication, publisher, and city of publisher).  We've already done a works cited page so this should be familiar.
