QUOTE
FOR THE DAY
Each of you will be responsible for presenting a quote for the day. Your first step is to locate an appropriate saying, proverb, or witticism to use. Do not choose the first saying you happen to find. Choose one that makes a point worth thinking about, one that reflects your values, one with an idea that trails after the words and remains in the mind. Aldous Huxley said, “Words form the thread on which we string our experiences.” A strong quote can also be the string. Useful reference books include Portable Life 101 by John Roger and Peter McWilliams, Life’s Little Instruction Book by H. Jackson Brown, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten by Robert Fulghum, Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations, 20,000 Quips and Quotes by Esar, and magazines such as Reader’s Digest “Quotable Quotes.”
After you have selected a saying, get a large index card from me and write the following information:
1. Copy the saying correctly, using a dark marker. Accuracy in wording, spelling, and punctuation is essential.
2. Provide the source of the quotation at the bottom right hand side of the card. Use anonymous or unknown if no source is given. Write your name in pencil at the bottom left hand side of the card.
3. On the back of the card, indicate where you found the saying: title, author, and page number of the book or magazine.
4. Also on the back of the card, write a brief explanation why you chose this particular saying. You may explain your interpretation of the quote but especially state clearly the reason this quote has an impact on values and life experiences.
5. On your assigned day, you will hold up your card and read your quote to the class. Wait 5 seconds and then read it again. You should then explain the value of this quote to the class extemporaneously, or you may read what you wrote on the back.
This is a powerful opportunity for you to present your point of view. As Emily Dickinson said, “A word is dead/ When it is said,/ Some say;/ I say it just/ Begins to live/ That day.”
