Casket Assignment

The Merchant of Venice

Examine each inscription from the 3 caskets. Explain what each choice revealed about the chooser in the mind of Portia's father.

GOLD:  “Who chooses me shall get what many men desire.”

SILVER:  “Who chooses me shall get what he deserves.”

LEAD:  “Who chooses me must give and gamble all he has.”

For each casket write at least 3 qualities that you think a person who chose that casket would have:

GOLD

SILVER

LEAD

CASKET ASSIGNMENT:  Think of a person from the world of politics, entertainment,                  sports, history, or your own life, who would make a good candidate for the Gold, Silver, or Lead casket.

Write a short poem that describes your candidate and measures his/her worth within the context of the three caskets.

Here is an example for Donald Trump:

Gold am I, my name is Trump,

                                            A few years back, I hit a slump;

Some even dared call me corrupt

But business is better since I went bankrupt.

Here is an example for Tobey Maguire:

Lead would I be if a choice I made

But I was bit by a spider and the groundwork was laid

For me to don the Spiderman suit and protect the universe

Death may meet me at the door, but to take a risk is my road to traverse
